Wireless deployment options

Wireless deployment options

Autonomous Access point

  • Home or small office environment
  • Standalone, independent devices
  • No wireless controller deployment model
  • Not commonly used in large companies

Lightweight Access point

  • Need a Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) for enterprise environment
  • Wireless controller deployment with a single control administration
  • WLC can be physicals or virtual
  • Controller communicates changes to AP
  • Control and provisioning Wireless Access point (CAPWAP) a wireless tunnel

  • Layer 3 boundary for each data VLAN is handled at/or near the WLC.
  • CAPWAP tunnel between AP and WLC that is usually connected to Core Switch are used to carry multiple VLANs

but in this situation look what happens when they move to another Vlan

If a user move a computer from one area to another it will keep the communication because it keeps the same IP address , that is called Layer 3 roaming ..  Wireless roaming

Cisco Flex Connect

  • Configure and control Remote wireless network
  • Similar to layer 3 roaming with Capwap
Cisco Flex connect central switched
When WLAN is configured to use Central Switching, traffic from an AP is still tunneled to WLC, however, local-site traffic can be enabled for local switching by configuring Split Tunneling. Normal CAPWAP mode of operation.  Not the recommended mode

Cisco Flex connect local switched
AP in Flex Connect Local Switching mode switches all traffic locally, even when AP can reach WLC. It is similar to the operation of autonomous APs which also switches traffic locally by mapping SSIDs to VLANs. Map user traffic to Vlan or adjacent switch.
